    Hire before you buy. I had 500f4 and 300mmf2.8 for weekends from jacobs when they were still in business. That convinced me that although the quality of the 500 was brilliant it is too big and went for a 2nd hand 300mm2.8 + 1.4 & 2xTC. The lighter weight of the mk2 lenses may have changed this...

    ISO on Canon 70D

    There is a menu option for iso settings (3rd tab from the left) which allows you to set the minimum ISO has this somehow been set to 400? Highlight tone priority if set will only allow you to have minimum iso of 200 but it doesn't sound like that.

    Calibration ?

    You have nothing to loose by trying the in camera mfa. There are several ways of doing it (Google should produce them) and the adjustments are easily reversible if they don't improve things.
