Info Wanted for Birding Bukit Tinggi and Genting Highlands, Malaysia

The Colmar "resort" is something else for sure. Don't try the food....just don't. They even messed up a Margarita pizza. Location is gorgeous though

Info Wanted for Birding Bukit Tinggi and Genting Highlands, Malaysia

Hi Mike, Bukit Tinggi is an easy trip from KL and the traffic shouldn't be too much of a problem early morning. The site is freely accessible and you don't really need a guide as it's a small site with clear, wide paths and lots of overlooks (worthwhile for eye-level views of canopy species)...

    Weekend near KL

Hi Saibal, I will let others give guiding recommendations, but I will say that this is one of the easiest locations I have been to for logistics and finding birds. It's a small site with easy, wide trails and a good car park (or a decent walk from the hotel). Just going around the gardens slowly...

    Kinabalu National Park

I wore my standard hiking boots there; no problems and you can cover quite some elevation. Beautiful park, enjoy!

    Vax passport requirement?

I know that you know, but in this age of wilful ignorance, semantics matter more than ever. Best, J

    Vax passport requirement?

There is, but it doesn't mean "being (100%) immune" as is often implied/misunderstood. It's simply the process of fortifying the immune system through exposure (to the pathogen itself or some derivative, like a vaccine). Either way, the OP is unlikely to face any restrictions anywhere.

    Whatโ€™s your nemesis bird?

If you'd like to visit the New Forest on a nice clear day in March I can get you both Siskin and Hawfinch with very little effort ๐Ÿ˜Š

UK Beginner - Need help excel maybe!

Hi Alex, welcome to a wonderful new hobby ๐Ÿ˜Š A spreadsheet is a great way to keep track of things, but I highly recommend downloading an app like eBird instead. It's very easy to use and does all the adding up, summaries etc. for you. Two small notes of caution: the Merlin app can be a bit iffy...

    Birding sites near Portsmouth

That makes life a lot easier! Farlington Marshes and Titchfield Haven would be the obvious targets. Titchfield is between Soton and Portsmouth and a lovely little reserve with good hides. You can combine it with the canal path along the floods for some extra species, incl. Glossy Ibis...

Changing Status of Firecrest in UK

I certainly see them more in my local area (edge of the New Forest) than when I moved here, 14 years ago. Prevalence seems strongly habitat dependant. In my back yard (central Hythe) I've had breeding Firecrest for the past few years, but Goldcrest is a rare winter visitor. Dibden Bay next door...

    Iceland in February - tips?

Closest to Rvk I've seen WTE was Hvalfjordur, Gyrfalcon only once in the city and a few times near Grindavik (all winter records). I recommend walking the coastal path from the harbour area to Seltjarnarnes. The scenery is nice (views of Snaefell on a clear day!) and you'll see lots of gulls...

London Area Business Trip - Looking for tips!

Fair point! I had a look around on eBird for sites near Heathrow that should give you a good cross-section of UK winter birding. You'll miss out on the coast because of the driving distance, but that's not the end of the world. How about spending your time between these sites: Burnham Beeches...

London Area Business Trip - Looking for tips!

Hey Kraken, One option you have is to head down the M3 to the New Forest NP - should take less than 1.5h on a Saturday morning. You get a good variety of habitats in close proximity, and I can give you a detailed itinerary since it's my local area. Beaulieu area for all common and rarer UK...

    Birding goals for 2023

Joining the relaunch of the UK Patchwork Challenge (excited about that). Keeping a casual 10 km local area list as well to add a but of variety. And I'll try to focus more on green, slow, local birding experiences - my life is busy enough as it is!
