    Hello Alexander, Thank you very much for your input. I thought Sanderling at first but they weren't running to the waters edge and back like a clockwork toy, typical Sanderling behaviour. There were approximately ten in total and I was drifting towards Dunlin but your observations have me saying...

    Thank you. Shows I have a lot to learn. Would not have thought of those two although there were flocks of goldfinches in the area and I thought stonechats had a more pronounced "neck ring".

    Thanks to you all. I was torn between chiffchaff, willow warbler and a wood warbler. hopefully unfortunately I couldn't get a side view and have not seen the bird again.
