    focus

One other test to do, given that the 10D has a slightly cruel reputation of poor focusing on occassion, is to take a shot of a subject that is inclined at the distance - typically the grass on the ground. Then, view the image on a hi-res monitor and see if the "best" focus is at the distance of...

Our cruise ship stop in Aruba (Jan 04)

We (my ex and I) spent two weeks on Bonaire in 2001, just next door. Was only just starting "serious" photography. As a primarily diving resort, without at the time being divers, we spent quite a bit of time just wondering around. The National Park on the north end of the island is rather cool...

    RAW vs JPEG

You are absolutely correct and I only plead a bad back and not enough coffee for getting my terms mixed up after all this time. Microlens, gather light to sensor that is smaller than the area dedicated to it; Anti-alias filter, spread the high frequency detail a bit (i.e. blur).

    DSLR sensor condensate

In that case you are lucky. I would have expected at least some residue... i guess warming at the right rate will just evaporate the water...

    Finchley / Golders Green

Thanks, I will. I appear to have done my back in again, whih means that carrying 15kg of tripod + 400mm f/2.8 lens etc. to try to "get" the Siskins, as recently identified for me, will be put off for a bit.

    RAW vs JPEG

If you do not blur the light, then fine detail may be completely lost. Think of the chance that a fine "red" detail lands only on the diagonal green masked sensors ? If you resolution is higher than the resoloving power of the lens, then you do not need this filter. This is what Kodak is...

    DSLR sensor condensate

If it's a Canon, they will normally do you a wet clean FOC if you ask. Especially (and specifically) is you are a CPS member (http://cps.canon-europa.com/). I am lucky in that I live quick near their Elstree service centre.

    RAW vs JPEG

The more the merrier... as long as the opinions are all based on fact and experience (please!) :-) Yes and no. While in most digital cameras there is an array of microlenses that make an effort to gently spread light over adjacent sensors in an effort to avoid stair-step effect (AKA...

    Finchley / Golders Green

Just thought this might be the appropriate place to describe where I live and what you can expect if you feel like seeing what there is to see in "Central" London. Using Streetmap (apolgies if you don't like it): http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=524914&Y=191610&A=Y&Z=1 In the...

    RAW vs JPEG

Just thought I would start a new thread after reading about various opinions in the 300D vs 10D thread. Speaking from the perspective of someone who occasionally writes software to work on RAW files (see http://www.wonderland.org/crw/ for an old page) here is my personal view; 1. CRW+THM...

    Confused, of London

In a rough (nature wise) part of the park that runs through Finchley and Barnet along with Dollis Brook. In this case a few hundred yards from my house :-) For anyone in North London that is starved of local variety, I have seen (in the past week or ten days): Kingfisher, Grey Heron, Woodpecker...

... not that that means much to me. Just learning, as I said :-) Thanks for all the startling quick replies.

    Confused, of London

Apologies for the quality, but they are from video :-( Now that I look at Siskins in my Collins book, that looks about right. I will look again next time I get out - depdning on weather mainly. First time I have ever seen them, but of course that is no indication of local rarity - more my...

    Confused, of London

First - I am not an experienced birder and I am here from the direction of nature photography - so no "d'oh!" comments please :-) Anyhow, the attached two photos are of one individual from a tree of 3 to 6 birds. They are about Robin or Blue-Tit sized, but the closet I can find in my bird books...

    camcorder

The Xi / MVX3i will take 1632x1224 still, but not in video mode - they are limited to 640x480 and don't work at all when doing 16x9 recording. This is a touch hidden in the bumf.
