I'm sorry to have taken so long in commenting on John's excellent illustration of the whereabouts of the Avocet broods. It seems that the most productive locations were nearest to the hide. I don't remember seeing them this close before. Were any of the nests actually in the grass? Peter

Well done, everyone at Upton. Also my congratulations to the birders of Trittiford. This used to be my local patch when I lived in Hall Green, and I know how difficult it is to see a range of species there; certainly I never got near their total of 47. Peter

Phil, Am I right in thinking that the numbers of Snipe seen over this past winter are lower than previous years? Peter

John, Have the increased numbers of Avocets this year, and the alterations made to the land layout, resulted in any changes in the choice of nesting and feeding areas? Also are the clutch sizes the same? Peter

Des, Presumably these terns were on the large raft. Was there any sign of terns occupying the newly-refurbished small rafts? Peter

Perhaps it might be a project for a work-party in the autumn to make the fence-posts too uncomfortable for perching? Peter

Today's Work Party at the Moors We completed two unfinished tasks today: the new hedge was taken up to the West Hide, and the area behind it had blackthorn and bramble cut down to improve the views from the West Hide towards the north-east. There were nine of us - Paul, Bob P., Dave, Jim...
