    In Swainson's the wingtips should reach the end of the tail on a perched bird. They are short of that in this bird. Peter

    No, it's not. But, it is the most common at times when hundreds are flying southward. Common and Red-throated are by no means rare.

    Storm-petrel ID, San Diego

    After the tropical storm hit California recently, several Least have been seen in the state including on inland waters. I was on a whale watching trip out of San Diego Wednesday on the week this was taken and we did have a Least Storm-Petrel.

    If one assumes the bird's flight at the time taken was perpendicular to the aim of the camera (in other words showing the full length of the bird) then the shortness of the tail strongly favors Least. Otherwise it is unidentifiable. Even with excellent photos some of these species/subspecies...

    Strictly speaking AFAIK there are no yellow-breasted hummingbirds in the world. At certain lights in certain angles the gorget can appear yellowish. The only one I know of whose gorget often reflects yellow is the Ruby-topaz which exists nowhere near the USA. Also the gorget is generally not...

    Tennessee Warbler - Wisconsin US

    I am not convinced it's one or the other from what we can see in the photos. The bill seems to be finer than that of the vireo and the extension of the tail beyond the undertail coverts seems shorter than normally seen in the vireo.
