    Goldcrest-Firecrest or what?

The length of the claws looks about right for Firecrest and much shorter than Goldcrest, so that doesn't really get us any closer to deciding just what it is. Perhaps a hybrid might show longer claws, but who knows? As Rob Stoff has mentioned, it seems to show some Goldcrest features like the...

    bluebirds vagrancy to europe.

There was a Blue Jay in Lancashire, England in 2003. Might still be under consideration by the BBRC because of obvious doubts about how it got there. Ric

    Nikon HGL 8x42. Fog-free?

Cheers Steve, for clearing that up (no pun intended). I wonder if any manufacturers are working on a way of preventing external fogging.

    Nikon HGL 8x42. Fog-free?

Hi all I've recently bought a pair of the Nikon HGL 8x42 bins, which I think are superb, but I just have one query about them. A wasp and two burying beetles

Yes, there are a couple of mites visible. The undersiide of the head and thorax was covered in them, but i didn't get a picture of those. This website explains a bit about them: http://www.kendall-bioresearch.co.uk/silphid.htm

A wasp and two burying beetles

Thanks everyone. Yes, in pic 2 the tips to the antennae are red, so investigator it is. They are shown slightly better in this pic (though still out of focus), and some yellow fur on the underside of the abdomen is also visible. Rick

A wasp and two burying beetles

Hi I've caught these in the moth trap this week. Can anyone ID them? 1:I've had a few of these wasps recently. 2:The first beetle looks like one of the banded sexton beetles (Nicrophorus investigator?) Is this correct? 3:And is the other beetle a black sexton beetle (Nicrophorus humator)...
