So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

I'm finding the 1.5 firmware upgrade to my R5 auto-focus to be a considerable improvement over the 1.4. When used with my RF100-500mm lens it definitely gets a bird's eye quicker and sticks there better than previously. This is a short sequence of heavily cropped shots taken from my back...

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

I have started to experiment with the inbuilt x1.6 crop mode on my R5 in conjunction with my RF 100-500mm lens + 1.4 TC for photographing distant birds. I calculate this gives me the equivalent maximum "reach" of (500 x 1.4 x 1.6)mm = 1120mm. Here's an example of a distant Greenshank taken with...

Camera for EF 100-400, up to ~ £1000

Henry, I second the recommendation to go for a used 7Dii body. Have a look at those on Camera Price Buster: https://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/Canon/Canon-Digital-SLRs/Canon-EOS-7D-Mark-II-Camera-Body Russ

Lovely varied set Colin - I particularly like the dragonfly in flight. I too think the R5 + RF 100-500mm is a great lightweight combo, and I love the minimum focusing distance for shooting butterflies and other insects. Russ

So is the Canon R5 a bird photography body?

    - there is no need for IS/IBIS at these extreme shutter speeds, and I also understand from the guy "Whistling Wings" on UTube that there could be some unwanted interaction as you pan quickly for fast moving in-flight birds if IS is left on. Russ
