A hike up to the top of La Mola above Cala San Vincent yesterday with Carole. Some migration was evident. After watching lots of marsh harriers on the marshes the last few days it was a bit of a surprise to see a migrating female lift off from the top of La Mola at 474 metres high. On the way...

It was great to meet Mike and Jane on the Platform at Depuradora today and the birds weren't too bad either with 3 Collared Pratincole giving a fantastic aerial display. A gull billed tern with its black ckunky bill was excellent and a cuckoo on the fence made it my 100th bird of the trip. A...

Baixo Alentejo, Castro Verde, Portugal 14-15th May 2011

A great trip report wolfbirder and interesting comments Simon. I was in the Castro Verde area on the Monday 16th May and after speaking to an english birder at Castro Marim the day before he recommended we visit the LPN reserve on the Beja road. It has a small visitors centre, a car park and he...

Thanks for the replies, Jan, I was not sure if bill colour would be ok for November and I thought I had read somewhere that the bill may look thicker at the tip due to some casp bills being so slender but I am obviously trying to make things fit which is always a worry. Steve

Only this photo . It did not stay that long before it was gone. It was only ever in this relaxed posture while I watched it. Small dark eye ,head shape , white head and chest long primary projection, thin bill and bill pattern, tertial pattern and greater coverts looked interesting Steve.

This gull stood out among the thousands of herring gulls .( The white headed gull at the top). I thought it may be a casp but the paleish eye has given me doubts. In the field it did show a small ammount of hindneck streaking. I did not see the open wing. Does a pale eye rule out adult winter...

Thanks Pete, Hi Josh, yes just the paleness of the upperwing contrasting with the outer primaries and a hint of a string of pearls had me panicking but on closer inspection obviously a GBBG. Just thought it was an interesting bird to show, Steve
