    Northern pintail

Oh, belly stains! Perhaps something to add in my future duck paintings! At first when I read this I thought you were insinuating the duck on the bottom was a Pintail. The staining on these birds seems amplified by the warm lighting.

Help me identify a bird please.

Ah....the bird that got me birding. You know, as common and popular as these birds are, they are still one of my top 10 favorite songsters. I have seen VERY pale females that are pretty creamy looking. I've also seen females that were almost as dark as the males. So, it's pretty variable...

    Bird ID please

I don't even know where to begin looking. Where was this bird photographed?

    Junco question

I agree that the diffused coloration kind of write off the Oregon Junco theory, though the females of the Oregon's race are very diffused color-wise as well. (To explain why I thought it may be a female Oregon's race.) These juncos have long confused me, and as I grew as a birder, I also grew...

    Junco question

It appears to me to be an "Oregon" Junco. The color of the back, and sides are all pretty good indicators. Although not a frequent visitor, I've seen them here in Pennsylvania, as they will occassionally stray as far east as the Atlantic seaboard. This individual appears to be a female, as...

A Day Of Birding in central Pennsylvania

For me, the White-Throated Sparrow is a rare, but pleasant encounter. Usually only residing here in the winter, I found it extremely amusing to find a few individuals in the company ofof Song Sparrows, Northern [Slate-Colored] Juncos, Black-Capped Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, and a dainty Downy...

Bird brain needs a bird I.D.

I know little about the range of European/Asian birds. Someone check out the Caspian Reed Warbler. Does the range fit? I also found the Savi's Warbler to be of close design. (Again, I don't know of the range.) But perhaps the bill of a Savi's is too thin? Perhaps it's just the picture.

Bird brain needs a bird I.D.

My initial guess without consulting a field guide is Acrocephalus scirpaceus or "Reed Warbler".

    Absolute Newbie

Thank you for your input Norm, it is much appriciated. The primary reason I have even considered photography is because the majority of illustrators I've talked to are also moderately talented "picture-takers". (I'll refrain from calling them photographers as photography is not a profession in...

    Basic Goose ID

Definitely an odd Canada Goose. I've never seen any with that feature before. Thanks for sharing.

    Domestic Waterfowl ID

Actually, the duck in attachment number two has barely visible tail feathers. I'll try and get a better photograph of it, but I've yet to notice a tail curl. Thanks a lot on the ID. I thought I was right about the Call Duck, but the Pekins had me thrown off. The pictures I saw of Pekins...

    Domestic Waterfowl ID

Although I imagine domesticated waterfowl is not a preferred topic, I've been "dabbling" over a few ducks that were recently "dumped" onto a local pond recently. As you will see in one of the attachments, a female mallard has been adopted into the group, and has been there for well over a year...

    Absolute Newbie

I know little to nothing about photography, but I recently attained a Sony FD Mavica digital camera for practically nothing. Photos as references are essential as an illustrator, so I'm hoping to eventually become a better photographer so I have better references. In any scenario, what would...

    Hybrid Gull?

These gull photos are so challenging. I'm learning so much from these discussions. On a sidetopic - I'm not exposed to gulls (or shorebirds) all that much here in Pennsylvania. What key parts of a young gull should one focus on to aid in identification? Everything seems so variable, and the...

    Need some help Identifying these!

Carpodacus mexicanus (House Finch), without a doubt. Definitely in my top 10 "favorite songbirds" list. Actually, theres a male that hangs out near a local convenience store who sings off and on throughout the night, obviously confused by the bright neon lights of the store. He was singing...
