    Late Records

With this mild weather continuing I'm still getting moths up here in North Wales, had 12 moths of 7 species last night including my first ever December records of Blair's Shoulder-knot and Silver Y. Had 10 species so far this month, my highest ever total for December. Geoff

    Good Day in the Garden

Unusual Visitor I suppose I'm fairly lucky where I live but I get a good variety of birds in the garden, Sparrowhawks are fairly regular visitors (one took a Goldfinch a few days ago), I can hear Tawny Owls most nights and a pair of Buzzards probably bred a few hundred yards away this year...

This is only the second time (in 20 years of trapping) that I have had Pale Brindled Beauty...

    Bloodvein - I'm Confused (again!)

Hi Jen I would say that these are all Blood-vein (comae), although there is a considerable variation. Small Blood-vein is fairly distinctive and you will know it when you see it, it is more of a sandy-brown colour, less red and has a broader central band) Geoff

    White-ringed Atlas Moth

Had been attracted to the restaurant lights overnight and was sat on a post outside the entrance in the morning. A little later it was eaten by a Bulbul. Wingspan approx 6 inches.

What's the most unusual bird you've seen on a seawatch?

Over many years watching at Spurn I have seen a good variety of birds coming in off the sea, including regular Woodcocks, Short-eared/Long-eared Owls, Snow Bunting, etc. but probably the best was a Great Grey Shrike in September 1976 which landed on the edge of the cliff just in front of the...
