Closing down the feeder for the summer.

Hi: We feed the birds all year. The beauty part is that in the summer you get different birds. We get rose-breasted grosbeaks each spring/summer. And we've had orioles which are not here in the cold months. And, of course, we put out sugar water and we have hummingbirds from May to...

Should i feed birds? I hope someone will settle the question of feeding ducklings bread. We've done it, and all has been well. Vik

Ditto. The Audubon book is great. We used it when we were in Hawaii. Be prepared to see some gorgeous birds. Have a great trip! Vik

    Are the hummers leaving?

During the past week we've seen a decline in the hummingbird population. Ruby throats. Usually, we have them around past the first week in September. Has anyone else noticed this? I hate to see them go. Vik

New to Birding. New feeders. No birds.

Hi and welcome. Hang in there. We have not been very successful with mixed seed. We found that the birds would pick out the sunflower seeds from the mixture and leave the rest. I think if you put out sunflower seeds, you will go broke feeding the birds but it will be worth it. Some birds...

    Today at the feeder

We have happily been having lots of activity: blue jays, cardinals (including two beautiful babies), nuthatches, mourning doves, lots of titmice, black-capped chickadees, downy woodpeckers, a few still-yellow goldfinches, and MANY ruby-throated hummingbirds. The hummers will leave in a few...

    Hello from PA!

Help! Bees take over hummingbird feeders.

Does anyone have a magic way to keep bees from hummingbird feeders? We have some aggressive bees which actually chase the birds. We keep the level of the nectar low so the bees can't actually drink it but evidently they are attracted by the smell. HELP!

do you feed throughout the whole year

Feeding the whole year has great benefits. First, different birds come to the feeders. We have glorious rose breasted grosbeaks in late spring and early summer. We'd never see them if not for our feeders. Also, if you provide food in the summer, many birds will bring their young to the...

Grey Squerill Trapped in squerril-proof feeder

I adore birds. But squirrels are doing what comes naturally, and I hate the thought that they are punished for their smart, intelligent natural behavior. Vik

Who feeds the birds for you when you are away on holiday?

I understand that house sitting and pet sitting services will feed birds -- for a fee, of course. I think paying for a service might be superior to asking friends or family to help out. Unless they are bird lovers, too, friends and family can sometimes be forgetful or casual about the whole thing.

    Chickadee scare

Mike, about a year ago I saw a chickadee on the ground, not quite fluffed up, but wings spread far out. I too thought it was dead but didn't touch it. After a long while. it pulled itself up, shook its wings a little, as though it was shaking off water and flew off. It was lying near a...

    your favorite bird

Favorite Bird Am I alone on the planet with my choice of the black-capped chickadee as a favorite bird? Hardly exotic but as a naturalist (whose name I cannot remember) wrote over 100 years ago, it is "the bird of the merry heart." Indeed! Vik
