    Birding without a camera, forever?

I use the Nikon coolpix950. I had a smaller one... the Nikon 650, but it went kaput after a few years, so decided to accept this larger optical 'beast'. Its all good. I use a Canon for non-birding in nature, but for birding, the 950 covers my needs. I bird with binoculars and a camera...

Nikon Monarch HG 8x30 - worth or not to buy, considering prose n cons?

The 8x30 size is an in between size, and will serve a purpose for many... it should be smaller and lighter than an 8x32, and more comfortable to use than an 8 x 25. Both the Swaro 8x30 and the Nikon MHG are good in that size. I like them both, but prefer the Nikon for the way it fits me...

What binocular provides your current favourite view?

I've adapted best to my 10x42 Noctivids for all round birding only bins. An ideal match for my eyeglasses in terms of eye relief and a perceived 'wide', immersive AFOV. I keep the eyecups screwed all the way down. I'm comfortable with 10x, and my interest in greater magnification is simply...

Do the owners of both Zeiss SF and Swarovski EL/NL feel they are uncomfortable for the different color cast?

Egad. Just for fun, here's an older analogy, and horribly inaccurate as well: Nikon and Leica: Kodachrome Zeiss: Fuji Swarovski: Ektachrome To be 'more serious', the color differences between these binoculars are really quiet and small, nowhere near as vividly portrayed by these differences in...

Do the owners of both Zeiss SF and Swarovski EL/NL feel they are uncomfortable for the different color cast?

I've only ever noticed a color shift when comparing side by side, and looking at light valued, neutral surfaces. I noticed a subtle green-ish in Zeiss compared to a blue-ish cast in the Swarovski. Its a quiet difference that quickly disappears with use, in my experience. I've had Zeiss, Swaro...

Having 2 pairs of binoculars. Which would you choose?

10 x 42 Noctivid, and a smaller bin.... 8 x 32 EL or 8 x 25 Zeiss VP. Both very good with eyeglasses. 8x25 is 'fiddly', but useful. And, of course a scope. But then that leaves out the Canon IS 15x50 for astro... If only 1, I would go for an 8x32. Maybe the NL, or maybe the EL, even though it...

What did you see in your binoculars today?

In the early morning, I dropped my wife off at the Oakland airport for her to visit family, and drove straight to Arrowhead Marsh, which is on the road to the airport. My best bird was a Lincoln's Sparrow, which was perched close, and made more of a ticking sound than any sort of musical...

Nikon 8x30 EII Still Worth getting?

If you wear eyeglasses while viewing, they might not work for you. This is one of the bins I wish I could own and use.

    Experience with Buying from Kyoei-Osaka

Egad, the price of bins overseas, perhaps because of the current US dollar value, is pretty astonishing. I was looking at Finland (varuste.net) but K-O is even better. The SFL 8x40, for example, is currently more than $500 less on the K-O website than what is offered in the US.

Binocular Evolution II: Curvature and Distortion

It doesn't do it for me either, but I recall reading a description of curvature of field that suggested such a thing... that it implied a fg slightly out of focus, for example. I think any such illusion, if it did work, would be entirely dependent on the context of the image.

Are the Swarovski NL 8x32s the best birding binoculars?

Its a gland, I think... Secretes Recall Juice, and less of it as we age. That's what I heard anyways.

Binocular Evolution II: Curvature and Distortion

If the basic perceived scale disparity that is observed in a magnified field of view is the primary effect being discussed, note that it can be present in unmagnified fields as well, but only comprises a portion of the image. How does a 'flat field' make it more obvious? Perhaps simply by...
