35-37 cm. Yellow eyes, black iris, and short ear-tufts, dark brown plumage.

The call is a frog-like kaar or rasping whistle shrss.

Africa and Madagascar.

[edit] Taxonomy

This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, Strigidae, which contains most species of owl. The other grouping is the barn owls, Tytonidae.

Grassland and marshy areas.

[edit] Behaviour

They lay 2-4 eggs amongst tussocks on the ground.

Diet includes insects, and small mammals, such as rodents and birds.
