Male - multi-coloured iridescent plumage and red eyes. The female, less colourful, has a white eye-ring and a whitish throat. Both adults have crested heads.

Eastern and the west coast of North America, and western Mexico.

Wooded swamps, shallow lakes, marshes or ponds.

[edit] Behaviour

They usually nest in cavities in trees close to water. 9-14 eggs are laid. The day after they hatch, the young climb to the nest entrance and jump to the ground.

The diet includes berries and seeds, also insects.

Voice: Female: High-pitched aaankh aankh aaankh usually given in flight.
