This taxon is considered a subspecies of Paroreomyza maculata by some authors[2]

Wet montane forests.

The diet includes insects, larvae, and spiders. It possesses a tongue that is specially designed for extracting insects from crevices in bark.

It builds a simple open-cup nest between March and May in ohi'a trees.
