19-23cm
Dark reddish brown head and neck, dark grey brown and black upperparts and wings, wings spotted white, white underparts, pale eye patches, and a crown stripe. Females may tend to be larger and slightly brighter.
Juvenile largely resembles adult.

Lowlands of southeastern Brazil to Paraguay, central Argentina and Chile.

A monotypic species.
Formerly placed in genus Rostratula.

Lowland wetlands, including wet grasslands, estuaries, rivers and streams.

The diet includes insects, larvae, crustaceans, and seeds.

It builds a shallow cup of grasses and reeds, often surrounded by water. 2-3 eggs are laid.
