India, Assam, Northern Burma and Pakistan.

Monotypic.

Wetlands; high altitude lakes.

[edit] Behaviour

It lays 3-8 eggs in a ground nest.

In summer the diet includes grass; in winter it feeds on barley, rice and wheat.
