Identification

17–19 cm

  • Black head with white streaks
  • Distinctive crest
  • Chestnut upperparts, duskier on wings and tail
  • Underparts ochraceous
  • White speckled dusky throat

Distribution

South America: found in south-eastern Brazil (Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul) to north-eastern Argentina

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Moist montane forests and plantations of Brazilian Araucaria (Araucaria angustifolia).

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists almost entirely of insects.
