Black head, light grey underparts, dark grey upperparts. Female has dark grey head.

Comoros, Madagascar, and Mayotte.

3 subspecies recognized:

Cucullata is sometimes split as Comoros Cuckoo-shrike, Coracina cucullata.

The birds from Moheli Island are sometimes put in the subspecies moheliensis which is not accepted by everyone.
