ViewsAzuero ParakeetFrom Opus
[edit] IdentificationNotice especially the pale buff patch on the ear coverts and the bold scalloping on the underside, with mid belly red.
[edit] DistributionLocally common in southwestern Azuero Peninsula (Panama); it is a species endemic to Panama. [edit] TaxonomyThis population was not described until 1985 (following discovery in 1979). It was originally thought to constitute a subspecies of Painted Parakeet, but studies soon showed that the most similar population known was Todd's Parakeet which at the time was believed to be a subspecies of White-eared Parakeet (but Todd's Parakeet is also sometimes assigned to Painted Parakeet). Azuero Parakeet is monotypic (no known subspecies) [edit] HabitatFound in humid forest and borders in hilly areas. [edit] BehaviourIt flies fast, moving in flocks of 10 to 15 individuals.
