• Chestnut-brown crown
• Grey sides to the head
• Black wings, wing coverts tipped with white and buff
• Whitish underparts
• Band of black spots across the chest
• Long, thin bill
• Very short tail

Colombia and Venezuela to Bolivia and Brazil.

This is a monotypic species according to Clements¹, while other authorities (Restall², Howard & Moore³?) have recognized more subspecies: cincta, stellata, and zononota.
