7,5cm. A tiny woodpecker

  • Pale yellow underparts
  • Brownish bars on breast
  • Brownish streaks on belly
  • Black head with white spots
  • Male has yellow forehead spots

Juveniles are duller brown and have streaked (not spotted) markings below

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil.
Poorly known, seems to be uncommon but possibly overlooked.

  • Brazil (lower Rio Madeira to lower Rio Purús)
  • P. a. purusianus:
  • Western Brazil (upper Rio Purús)
  • P. a. flavifrons:
  • North-eastern Peru and western Brazil (along Rio Solimões)
  • P. a. juruanus:
  • Eastern Peru to western Brazil (upper Rio Juruá)

Humid terra firme forest and varzea forest.
Seen mainly at edges and in clearings, also in second growth.

Breeding season probably June to November. No other information.
