Henicorhina leucoptera

Identification

11 cm (4¼ in)

  • Chestnut upperparts
  • White supercilium
  • White wingbar (two wingbars according to some sources)
  • Outer primaries edged white giving white edge to folded wing
  • Streaky-grey underparts
  • Juvenile darker and lacking the wingbars

Similar species

Found at higher elevation than Gray-breasted Wood-Wren which it is most similar to; the wing bars found in the adult are specific when present.

South America: found in the Andes of northern Peru and immediately adjacent Ecuador

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

More closely related to White-breasted Wood-Wren than Gray-breasted Wood-Wren contrary to what should be assumed from plumage.

Habitat

East slope of Andes (~7000 feet). Disturbed roadside, tropical humid montane forest.

Behaviour

Territorial, mostly found near the forest floor.

Diet

Their diet appears to consist almost entirely of invertebrates.
