Found in Africa from southern Cameroon south to Angola and in the Congo Bassin.

This species was considered conspecific with Rufous-vented Paradise-Flycatcher in the past.

Two subspecies:

• T. b. batesi from Southern Cameroon to Gabon
• T. b. bannermani in Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo
