There are 3 subspecies^[1]:

• P. p. bogotensis:

• Western Colombia (Cauca Valley and Cundinamarca)

• P. p. brevipennis:

• North-eastern Colombia to southern Venezuela, the Guianas and extreme northern Brazil

• P. p. pectoralis:

• Southern Brazil to eastern Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay and northern Argentina

Dry savanna and seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland.
