Length 14-15 cm. Black crest and bill. Yellow eyes, legs and feet.

Male: Black upperparts, throat and bib; white wing patches.

Female: Bright chestnut back and tail.

Africa:
West Africa: Sierra Leone to northern Angola, Zaire
East Africa: Uganda, Kenya to eastern Tanzania

There are 3 subspecies:

Dry and moist lowland forests and moist montane forest up to altitude of 1500 m.s.
