Identification

18–22 cm (7-8¾ in)

• Blue head and nape
• Yellow underparts
• Short thick bill

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru

Taxonomy

Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager has been considered conspecific with this species in the past.
Gill and Donsker place this species in the genus Buthraupis.

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies^[1]:

• C. e. eximia:

• Eastern Andes of Colombia and south-western Venezuela

• C. e. zimmeri:

• Western and Central Andes of Colombia

• C. e. chloronota:

• Eastern slope of Andes of south-eastern Colombia (Nariño) and north-western Ecuador

• C. e. cyanocalyptra:

• Eastern slope of Andes of south-eastern Ecuador to northern Peru

Habitat

They can be found in wet montane forests, especially with a lot of moss; elfin woodland and forest edges.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of fruit and insects.
