Small (10.5-11 cm). Grey wth red rump and upper tail-coverts and black line through eye. Similar to Cindarella Waxbill, but darker grey without red on lower flanks, and tail longer.

Africa south of the equator.

• Zaire, Angola, Zambia, Tanzania and northern Malawi

• E. p. incana

• Southern Malawi, eastern Zimbabwe, Mozambique and eastern South Africa

Open woodland and forest edges.

Found singly or in pairs.

Forages on ground close to or under dense cover for grass seeds, nectar and insects.
