13.5-14 cm
Breeding

  • Streaked dark brown back
  • Black crown, face patch and throat
  • White supercilium
  • Orange breast
  • White belly with orange stripes
  • Fine pointed bill

Sexes are similar
Winter birds and Juveniles do not show so much contrast; the dark throat may be hardly visible in young birds.

Slightly larger than Siberian Accentor but easily identified by black throat and bib and more streaky back.

Temperate and subarctic Asia. It winters in India and other parts of southern Asia. It is a rare vagrant in western Europe.

There are 2 subspecies:

  • P. a. atrogularis
  • P. a. huttoni

It winters in scrub or cultivation.

It builds a neat nest low in spruce thickets, laying 3-5 unspotted blue eggs.
