Identification
18–21·5 cm (7-8½ in)
Male
- Mottled brown crown
- Black in front of eyes
- Black throat separated from black eye-stripe by broad whitish stripe passing through ear region and down neck
- Underparts "scaly" black and white pattern
- Upperparts patterned with buff, brown, and black
Female
- Buffy chin and upper throat
- Nape feathers edged grey
- Ear feathers streaked buff
- White breast with dark shaft-streaks and cross-bars with two rows of terminal white spots
Distribution
Central America: found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua.

- C. n. caboti:
- South-eastern Mexico (northern Campeche, Yucatán and northern Quintana Roo)

Habitat
Dry shrubland and seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, brush borders.
Behaviour
Diet
They appear to eat mostly seeds. Apparently they get their moisture from vegetation.
