Identification

16-18 cm

  • cap blue bordered by bright yellow flash stripe
  • malar patches and breast patch blue
  • throat stripe yellow
  • ventral areas and undertail-coverts pale yellow
  • rest of plumage rich green

Female similar but only weakly marked blue cap and no blue breast patch. Juveniles with more conspicuous yellow fringes to wing feathers.

Distribution

Found on Halmahera, Ternate, Bacan and adjacent islands in the northern Moluccas, Indonesia.
Moderately common but difficult to observe.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Lowland forest up to 750 m, mangroves and coastal woodland.

Behaviour

The diet includes fruit.
No information on breeding or movements.
