Identification

  • Dark iridescent greenish-black lower back
  • Brown crown and mantle
  • White chin and throat
  • Rufous breast
  • White underparts
  • Black wings and tail
  • Very long pointed bill
  • Black legs
  • Red iris

Sexes alike

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.

Taxonomy

Subspecies[1]

There are 7 subspecies:

  • B. l. fulviventris:
  • Eastern base of eastern Andes of Colombia (Buenavista and Villavicencio)
  • B. l. caquetae:
  • Eastern base of Eastern Andes of Colombia (south of Caquetá) to eastern Peru
  • B. l. lugubris:
  • B. l. obscuriceps:
  • B. l. naumburgae:
  • North-eastern Brazil (Maranhão and Piauí)
  • B. l. melanosterna:
  • B. l. phaeonota:
  • Central Brazil (known from one specimen from Rio Solimões)

Habitat

Gallery forest, savanna woodland, forests near rivers.

Behaviour

Breeding

It nests in burrows.

Diet

The diet includes insects.
