Identification
14–16·5 cm (5½-6½ in)
Male
- Greyish-brown cap
- Cinnamon-brown nape, cheeks, throat and upper breast
- Rose tipped feathers (in varying amounts) on rump, belly, tail and wing-bend
Female: paler brown and red
Distribution
Southeastern Wyoming, Colorado and north-central New Mexico.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Open ground in the mountains; snowfields, glaciers, meadows. High-altitude coniferous forest.
Behaviour
Breeding
Monogamous. They nest on cliffs or in caves; the nests are made from grass, mud and roots. The young fledge within 14-20 days from hatching.
Diet
Their main diet consists of seeds, with the addition of insects in the summer
