45-57cm. Dark brown upperparts, white spotted shoulders, buff, brown streaked underparts, brown or rufous facial disc, dark brown iris, white neckband. Sexes similar.

South China, western Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka.

There are 12 subspecies.

Thick forests.

The diet includes small mammals, reptiles and birds.

It nests in a tree hole; 2 eggs are laid.
