33-36 cm. Grey head, white throat, rufous neck, back and underparts, olive brown upperparts, black rump, tail and vent, red iris and legs, green bill, yellow frontal shield.

Local in western Colombia to Ecuador and Peru.

This is a monotypic species.

Lowland swamp-like woodlands, mangroves, river edges to 1,300m.
