13cm. Dark grey-brown upperparts, white underparts, light grey-brown head and neck, black legs and a short stout straight dark bill.

The male makes several shallow scrapes. The female chooses one and lines it with grass. 4 eggs are laid and are incubated by both parents.

The diet includes aquatic insects and crustaceans, foraged for on mudflats.
