63cm. Black with blue metallic sheen back, head, neck, wings, white underparts and chin, white wing stripe, orange-red bill, pink webbed feet. Breeding adults have short crest on head. Juvenile - brown plumage.

Open seas and rocky shores.

The diet includes fish and marine invertebrates.

It nests on cliffs, rocky ledges, hollows, or in sea caves. The nest is made from tussock grass and other plants; 2 pale blue eggs are laid.
