Endemic to the Canary Islands.

Two subspecies accepted:

• P. c. exsul on Lanzarote (maybe extinct)
• P. c. canariensis on La Palma, Gomera, Hierro, Tenerife and Gran Canaria

Has been considered conspecific with Common Chiffchaff in the past.
