[edit] OverviewA unique spot. A long triangular Southwesterly peninsula funnels migrating hawks over a point at the end (Smith Point, Texas) where a hawk viewing platform has been set up by Hawkwatch International and Gulf Coast Bird Observatory. [edit] Birds[edit] Notable SpeciesAn expert hawk counter or two who are usually willing to help beginners occupies this platform every day August 15 to November 15 from 8AM to 4PM. Hawks don't start arriving until mid-morning usually. Today 21-August-2005 I saw the following in less than 90 minutes from the platform: Swallow-tailed Kite, Broad-winged Hawk, Swainson's Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Turkey Vulture as added bonus saw many Magnificent Frigatebird and 2 Olive-sided Flycatcher from platform and rare in this area Couch's Kingbird nearby (on wires at Ouisa rd at Hawkins camp rd).
