This species is either monotypic or has three subspecies (nitens, phoenicopterus, and culminator) depending on authority.

Forest, bushveld, riverine forests, close to lakes, dams and streams, parks and gardens.

Monogamous.

They nest in a tree cavity; 2-6 blue eggs are laid.

The diet includes insects.
