Family: Emberizidae

The Emberizidae are a large family of passerine birds. They are seed-eaters, as evidenced by possessing relatively large, strong bills. In Europe, they are typically called buntings, but in North America, family members are known as Sparrows. However, the North American Sparrows are not closely related to the Old World Sparrows, which are in family Passeridae.

Emberizidae is a family in the order Passeriformes.
The Longspurs and Snow Buntings have been moved to their own family Calcariidae and with the 2012 Clements update around 40 genera have been moved to the tanager family Thraupidae.
