This genus contains only a single species which has previously been included in genus Caryothraustes.
Parkerthraustes has traditionally been placed as a genus in the family Cardinalidae; recent evidence indicates that it may be better treated as a member of the family Thraupidae. As a consequence of this, SACC has moved Parkerthraustes to Insertae Sedis.
