Genus: Picoides

[edit] Description

13 species of Woodpeckers, mainly from North America and South America, one species in Europe and Asia.

[edit] Taxonomy

Picoides is a genus in the Family Picidae.
Two SACC proposals deal with moving one species into this genus (Smoky-brown Woodpecker) and two over into Veniliornis (Checkered Woodpecker and Striped Woodpecker).
More serious are comments in the same proposals that the genus Picoides is a non-natural entity and it is likely to be split or otherwise rearranged in a major way in the future. It will be exciting to see where all of this ends!
