Olive brown back, upperparts, pale tipped tail, yellow underparts, grey head, pale lemon throat, dark eye stripe, black legs and feet, straight black bill; male has an orange crest which is usually concealed.

Uruguay, Panama, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, and Venezuela.

There are 3 subspecies.
The scientific name has been spelled rixosus in the past.
