• Dark green back
• Yellow below
• Red band across belly
• Black head
• Chestnut ear patches
• Dark brown-black bill
• Yellow streak to tip of upper mandible
• White iris
• Blue eye skin

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

There are 2 subspecies:

• P. c. castanotis:

• Southern and eastern Colombia to eastern Ecuador, south-eastern Peru and north-western Brazil

• P. c. australis:

• Eastern Bolivia to western and south-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina

Moist lowland rainforest to 900 m, swamp forests, lake and river edges.

They nest in tree holes and in abandoned arboreal termitaria.

The diet includes fruit and insects.
