  • Yellow below
  • Red band across belly
  • Black head
  • Chestnut ear patches
  • Dark brown-black bill
  • Yellow streak to tip of upper mandible
  • White iris
  • Blue eye skin

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

Moist lowland rainforest to 900 m, swamp forests, lake and river edges.

They nest in tree holes and in abandoned arboreal termitaria.
