14-15cm. Male - chestnut brown upperparts and head, yellow belly and breast, streaked at sides, short tail. Female - dull brown, dark streaks on upperparts, pale yellow underparts, dull chestnut rump, buff throat.

Siberia, northern Mongolia and north-eastern China. Winters in southern China, south-east Asia and north-east India.

Monotypic.

Open forest with shrubs. Winters in farmland, scrub and woodland edges.
