Breeds in Patagonian Chile (only Magellanes including Tierra del Fuego) and Argentina; in winter found further north into Uruguay.

Vagrant to Brazil.

This is a monotypic species[1].

This species has in the past been placed in genus Xolmis, but the current world-wide checklists all agree on Neoxolmis.
