Identification

23-24cm

  • Black plumage with slight blue iridescence
  • Black iris
  • "Corrugation" (structure of ridges) on the lower mandible

Distribution

South America: found in Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.

Taxonomy

This species is the only member of its genus.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • G. c. sulcirostris:
  • G. c. chopi:

Habitat

Dry savanna, wet or flooded lowland grassland and pastureland to 1000m.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes seeds, grain and insects.

Breeding

They nest in holes or crevices. The clutch consists of 4-5 eggs.
