Found on islands off southeast Papua New Guinea and Louisiade Archipelago.

This is a monotypic species.
This species belongs to the Collared Kingfisher complex and was formerly considered conspecific with Collared Kingfisher, Torresian Kingfisher, Mariana Kingfisher, Melanesian Kingfisher and Pacific Kingfisher.
